Most gamblers, and gambling books for that matter, all advise you to bet-it-up when the dice are sizzling hot, and scale things back when the cubes are ice cold (or vice versa for Darkside bettors).

For this discussion, let’s ignore random streaks and indiscriminate trends; we’ll leave them for the gamblers. We are here to make money, not to gamble.

For now let’s concentrate on the times when we ourselves or other skilled dice-influencers have the dice.

Under those circumstances, traditional wisdom still highly recommends that we should press up our bets on a hot D-I hand, and scale things back to a minimum until any given D-I hand is adequately qualified as a bona-fide ‘good’ one.

On the surface that looks like good advice. I mean, who here thinks it’s a bad idea to strike while the iron (or the shooter) is hot?

Question Traditional Wisdom

To the shoot-for-the-moon, go-for-the-gusto, grab-for-the-brass-ring gambler that lives inside all of us, that concept seems to make a lot of sense; and since it follows what we've always been told is traditional gambling wisdom, we follow it just as blindly as every other loser…er, uh, I mean every other gambler who has ever thrown a pair of dice...and not surprisingly, we lose just like every other gambler who has ever thrown a pair of dice.

The reasoning goes that if we press things up when we are on fire, we’ll make enough money to overcome the losses that we expended when things weren’t nearly quite so hot.

Unfortunately when we look at the big-picture to see where we stand overall (by tallying all of our big pressed-up wins, our big meltdown losses, our small wins, and our small losses); we generally find that we still produce an overall net-loss.

You would think that by following the traditional press-when-you-are-winning school-of-gambling-thought, that we’d come out way ahead of the game…or at least even a little ahead.

Sadly though, when measured over a reasonable number of multiple sessions, most press-when-you-are-winning skilled-shooters emerge with a net-loss, or at best, a near-break-even position despite all of their D-I efforts.

What’s wrong with this picture?

Well, by buying into traditional gambling wisdom, most skilled players completely overlook advantage-play wisdom.

The two are worlds apart…as is their bankroll-related growth.

~The other takes most of the gambling out of the casino-gambling equation and replaces it with advantage-focused bankroll-growing wagering.

Though the prospect of steady and stable bankroll growth is there for the taking for practically every skilled dice-influencer out there; scarcely few take it.

Why?

Gambling satisfies a primal urge that lives deep within our psyche. The thrill of the gamble more often than not outweighs the joy of the win. So even when a gambler loses, his urges are still partially satiated. If he manages to pull off a profit-making win, then all the better; but for him the real thrill is in the chase and not the catch.

Why do you think it's so easy to lose back freshly-made winnings?

It's because the gambler in us makes bet-decisions that are subconsciously geared to lose it back.

For modestly skilled dice-influencers, the line between winning and losing as well as the profit or loss that goes along with it, is an incredibly thin and tenuous one.

That simply means that the margin between making money and losing money from your own D-I skills; has very little "give" or elasticity to it.

You’ve probably heard the old adage by Derek Bok, president of Harvard University, “If you think the cost of education is high, you should check the cost of ignorance”. That holds true for advantage-play craps as much as it does for life itself.

The biggest cost of learning to profitably influence the dice is NOT in the original mistakes that we make along the way, but rather in the mistakes that we keep on repeating over and over again.
If you keep on making the same betting-mistakes that are unduly hindering and restraining your net-earnings; then chances are you will continue to have a disconnect between your skill and your profit, not because it has to be that way and not because the profit isn’t there for the taking, but simply because you choose tokeep it that way.

The Disconnect between Skill and Profit

One of the biggest disconnects between dice-influencing players and the skill-set that they possess; is the amount of money that they make or rather, the amount of money that they DON’T make.

Given a similar edge in nearly any other casino game, countless numbers of advantage-play pro's should be descending upon dice-influencing like degenerate craps-players used to flock to off-hour 25-cent bird-games at the Plaza, LVClub, and El Cortez.

The problem of course is that dice-influencing is a physical skill that has to be coupled with iron-willed mental discipline and matched-to-skill betting-methods.

Many who have the discipline, lack the physical skill; while many who have thephysical skill...lack the discipline.

Due to that skill-variability and the fact that most players from our community initially approach craps as gamblers first, and only subsequently become advantage-players after the fact; acts to conspire against the success of many of our most skillful dice-influencing citizens.

That is, for most players, even though their physical skills have been developed to the point where they can play with a major advantage over the casino; it's easier to REMAIN a gambler than it is to make the difficult transition into becoming a disciplined, consistently-profitable advantage-player.

For that reason, I still stand by my opinion that most skilled players severely UNDERBET their own skill by a rank of several multiples...and concurrently OVERBET random-rollers (and other unqualified shooters) by just as much or even more of a disproportionate margin...all the while zig-zagging bets on their own shooting all over the place (based on one or two errant outcomes) instead of putting it on on KEEPING it on their highest-validated (by several-thousand tosses) box-numbers.

The number of exceedingly skilled dice-shooters who are still in that frustrating break-even stage of profit-production is absolutely astounding...and obviously quite disappointing to me.
It is heartbreaking to watch a player with an obvious finely-honed skill, under-bet his own advantage to the point where there’s rarely any profit to show for it; and then watch him piss it away by over-betting on random-rollers as he awaits another turn with the dice…only to start his own under-betting process all over again.
To my mind, most talented players keep themselves unnecessarily locked in break-even purgatory simply because they continue to under-bet their specific skills, yet willfully and continuously over-bet many marginal or negative-expectation wagers on themselves...as well as their seeming addictive fondness for mis-sizing and/or mis-wagering on random-rollers.

I used to frequently post replies to Message Board trip reports where players complained about how much money they lost while betting on random-rollers...while equally lamenting how much money they could have and should have won from their own hands "if I had only bet it a little more appropriately".
I used to gently encourage them to redeploy some of those randomly wasted dollars onto their own biggest-edge, best-bet opportunities; but I long ago stopped, simply because I saw the futility of doing so.
So here are some immutable truths about what we do, that continue to hold merit even after all of these years:

Ø If you are more of a gambler than an advantage-player; then your profit objectives will never be met, however your gambling urges will probably be satisfied.
I’ve accepted that fact for the verity that it is.

It doesn’t have to be that way, but most talented players choose to keep it that way.

A long time ago, Heavy and I discussed the fact that many skilled players are actually afraid of winning and feel unworthy of gaming-profits (for various psychologically explainable reasons), so they make bets that they know will pretty much ensure their continued losses; and despite what they say...they would rather remain part of the losing majority.

Unfortunately, that still appears to be true.

A simple change in how much you bet on your own validated-edge wagers, versus how much you bet on your OTHER NON-validated neg-ex wagers as well as what you bet on random-rollers...can most times bridge that skill-to-profit gap...and in doing so make it far, far easier to stay on the profitable side of that winning and losing line.

Like I said earlier, the biggest cost of learning to profitably influence the dice is NOT in the original mistakes that we make along the way, but rather in the ones that we keep on repeating over and over again.

That has nothing to do with LUCK; but it has everything to do with letting your D-I skills do the GOOD that they are dying to produce...if only you'll give them an adequate and properly-funded chance to do so.
The idea behind dice-influencing is to first create an edge over the house on certain wagers, and then to bet on that edge in a compelling way when you have the dice in your hand.

Most skilled shooters still approach the game with the original gambling tactics they first learned before they took up dice-influencing. They start small and try to build their bets as the hand moves along.

Unfortunately that approach fails to recognize the most basic tenets of shooting with a positive-expectation edge; and that is to use your advantage as SOON as possible and as OFTEN as possible.
Success in dice-influencing is a long journey with many twists and turns. The temptation to chase un-covered outcomes that you don’t have money on will always be there, but it is how you resist that temptation that determines whether or not your overall edge will prevail.

I'd Rather be GOOD Than LUCKY - Part Three

WARNING: This article contains a rant which some readers may find offensive or disturbing. Reader discretion is strongly advised.

If you want to encapsulate what is wrong with the way in which most dice-influencers bet (and why they have little to no net-profit to show for all of their de-randomizing efforts); you simply have to look at the thought-process behind the way they wager their money.

We’ve had some great fun recently by discussing (and for some, by fantasizing about) how you would have bet on Patricia Demauro’s 4-hour 18-minute mega-roll at A/C’s Borgata (which comes along, what, once every 20 years or so, which works out to about once every 5.6-billion hands). Frankly though, if we spent even a tiny fraction of that time figuring out how to make money off of our own more mundane, but much more typical 8–roll or 10-roll or 12-roll hands (which constitute around 85% of what we throw most often); then we’d be light-years ahead in the profit department.

Let me show you what I’m talking about, first with a random-roller, and then with an SRR-7 shooter.

For a randomly-thrown perspective:

~Only 50% of the hands of random shooters have a median value of 6.96 rolls or more (and that means that the other 50% of those randomly-thrown hands will be less than 6.96 rolls from start to finish).

~Only 5% of those randomly-tossed hands will be of 23 or more rolls.

~Only 1% of all randomly-tossed hands are of a throw length of 35 or more rolls.

~Only 0.49% of those hands ever get to 40 or more rolls. That means less than one-half of one-percent (1-out-of-200) of all randomly-tossed hands last for 40 or more rolls.

~Finally, only 0.12% of random hands (1-out-of-833) will last beyond 50 or more rolls.

Let’s put that into an SRR-7 dice-influencing perspective:

~Only 50% of the hands of a SRR-7 shooter have a median value of 7.30 rolls or more; so that means that the other 50% of those skillfully-thrown hands will be less than 7.30 rolls from start to finish.

~Only 5% of those de-randomized hands will be of 25 or more rolls.

~Only 0.70% of those hands (1-out-of-143) will ever get to 40 or more rolls.

~Finally, only 0.19% of those hands last beyond 50 or more rolls. That means less than one-fifth of one-percent (1-out-of-526) of these skillfully-tossed hands last for 50 or more rolls.

What Does That Mean for You and Your Betting-Dollars?

Well it means that the biggest and brightest money-making opportunities lay in the early, fattest, most frequently-occurring part of your hand…and since such a small number of your hands get to or go beyond the 20-roll mark; very little NET-profit will ever come from there.

While it’s true that the money that you make from those long hands can be used to bail out some of the losses that you incur during shorter hands; the real question isWHY do you incur so many losses on the hands that are less than stellar.

Only 1% of those dice-influenced hands (1-out-of-100) are of throw-lengths of 37 or more rolls.

~The answer is simple.

Your betting is not in synch with the hand-duration that you throw most frequently.

No wonder most guys have to use their long-hand winnings to bail out their shorter-hand losses. It’s not because of poor dice-influencing abilities; it’s because of poorbet-making decisions.

Most D-I gamblers take that route anyway simply because they not only don’t know any better; but also because they’ve been mistaught and unintentionally misled by the very same like-minded gamblers who also haven’t yet been able to turn their ownconsiderable D-I talents into sustainable bankroll-growing D-I profits.

In many ways, that co-dependant relationship serves to perpetuate the continuation of those losing ways from one talented dice-influencer to the next. By propagating the idea that we as dice-influencers need medium to long-hands to ‘get anywhere’ and to try to design "press, press, press" strategies that seek to take advantage of those mini-mega hands, only enables, breeds, and promulgates the continued losing for the vast majority of the D-I community.

Gambling dice-influencers love the RISK.

Advantage-play dice-influencers love the REWARD.

The Fat Part of the Point Cycle is fat because the bulk of your roll-duration resides near the front (start) of your point-cycle rather than at the back-end of it.

Advantage-play dice-influencers take advantage of their skills by taking advantage of the type of hands that they toss most often. Those are the average-length run-of-the-mill hands that last up to around 12 point-cycle rolls.

If you take proper advantage of those; you’ll never 'need' to toss a 20-roll or 30-roll or 50-roll hand again; but when you do, those mini-mega’s will be the cherry on the top of what is already a very profitable, very steady, and very sustainable sundae.

From the sublime to the ridiculous, that means you will have far more two-roll point-cycle hands than you will of 100-roll hands; and you will have far more p-c rolls that last from 7 to 12 tosses than you will of the 20, 30, 40, 50, or 60-toss variety.

If your betting is geared to taking advantage of the abnormal-length hands; then while those will definitely produce a profit from that particular hand; its value will be totally absorbed by paying for all the money you lost on lesser hands.

Dice-influencing is a valid advantage-play concept that proves out quite easily; but you have to put your money where you have the edge.

Most dice-influencers understand that idea in abstract, but they don't apply it when it comes to actually putting their money where it will do the most good.

Let’s take a careful look an SRR-7 shooter's point-cycle roll-duration to see how often ‘normal’ happens (as well as to see how banking on the 20-roll hands to make the bulk of your profit is the height if stupidity, unless of course you are banking on the 30-rollhands to do so, in which case that is an even higher height of stupidity).

So, out of 100 hands, our SRR-7 shooter will get past his first point-cycle roll about86% of the time...and only get past his 30th p-c roll without a 7 about 1% of the time.

While short-hands may seem to be the cause of why you always end up needing those longer 20-roll hands; that isn’t the real underlying reason.

In other words, if you’ve been taught to believe that the 20-roll and 30-roll hands is where the profit is (and you’ve been taught to gear your betting to that); then you’ve been sold a bill of goods that will pretty much guarantee continued losses despite any big-dollar profits that those headline-grabbing hands will bring it.

The simple truth is that if you can’t make fairly decent money off of the shorteraverage-duration hands, and you really need the long 20-roll ones to make any kind of money; then it is your betting that is really holding back your net-earnings, and not the overall lack of long hands (or the fact that you seem to throw 'too many' average-duration ones).

Think about it.

Have you ever read a string of trip reports where a group of guys will lament the fact that their shared session, though peppered liberally with a bunch of 12 to 15-roll hands, and a few Point-then-Seven-Outs, “Never really got things going because nobody could muster a decent 20-roll hand to put everyone into a profit position".

Well let me let you in on a little secret:

If you need a 20-roll hand to “get you over the hump”; then most of your sessions will almost always show a net-loss.

More over, your losses will almost always outpace your wins; but even when they don’t, your profit will almost never be enough to offset your previous losses.

Oh sure, you’ll REMEMBER all those winning sessions like they are the names of your grandchildren, and you’ll be able to instantly recall many of the facts during its countless retelling when you gather with friends; but again the truth is:

If you need a 20-roll hand to make money; then your losses will almost always outstrip your wins.

No matter how good you get at this dice-influencing thing that we do, you are always going to throw an occasional PSO (Point-then-7-Out). However, if you scratch just a bit below the surface; you’ll find that PSO’s ARE NOT the reason you need 20-roll hands to make a profit, nor is the preponderance of average-duration hands the reason either.

The reason for those losses can almost always be traced back to THE WAY you are currently structuring your bets.

If your wagers are set up in such a way as to require multiple presses or way too many paying-hits before they show a net-sessional profit; then you are going to be disappointed with your losses way more often than you’ll be elated by your wins.

Even though talented dice-influencers do indeed throw quite a few more 20-roll hands than we expect from random-rollers (to the tune of 1.76 times more frequently for anSRR-7 shooter, and 2.66 times more frequently for an SRR-8 shooters, and 3.65times more frequently for an SRR-9 shooter); the fact is that 20-roll hands whileseeming to be quite common, are not all that frequent when you put it into perspective of the average number of hands (of lesser duration) that occur between each incidence of those much sought after 20-roll hands.

…and if you are counting on random-rollers to save the day for you with one of theiroccasional 20-roll hands; then do yourself a favor…

...Rip up your money into tiny little pieces and mail it into the casino.

That way, you’ll save the gas money of actually having to go there and losing it directly.

Likewise, if you try to rely on random-rollers to bail out your own off-day or off-session shooting; then it’s like putting your airline meal directly into the air-sickness bag. You are saving the hassle of going through a middle-man and the trouble of actually having to eat the meal.

A random-roller can sometimes serendipitously save your session; but most times it’s the major cause of a net-loss in the first place…and yet another chief reason why you need all those 20-roll hands in the first place.

Face it, you’re a little too old to believe in fairy tales, and you’re also a little too old to believe that you can turn a random-rollers neg-ex rolls into a reliably steady pos-ex payer OFTEN ENOUGH to make any money at it.

If you think otherwise; then you are living in a fantasy Dreamland, and merely deluding yourself.

The other reason that you'll often find yourself in need of 20-roll hands, is because your current betting is geared towards the long-hand end of the roll-duration spectrum. Again though, even in the hands of a talented shooter or a small group of talented shooters; those 20-roll hands don’t always occur frequently enough to show an OVERALL net-profit for the more-aggressive of bettors.

Oh sure, there will be times when you or other talented shooters DO string together a number of 20-roll hands in the same session; and those sessions will join the others that bear retelling when you gather over coffee or beer; but the reason they are so vividly recallable is because of their rareness of occurrence. I’m not saying that they don’t occur or that they don’t occur quite frequently; rather I’m just saying that they won't always occur often enough to continually bail your ass out of all the other losses you incur while waiting for those 20-roll hands to happen.

There's a ton of money that can be made off of each one of your 'normal' average-duration hands...and when you add each of them together; those profit-figures could far surpass the true NET-profit that you've ever made off ofall your mega-hands and mini-monsters...combined.

That's a lot of money to leave on the table...all the while hoping and praying that THIS HAND will be the world-beater you've been waiting for. That's not even close to what advantage-play betting is all about; but it sure goes a long way to explaining why just as much praying goes on in a casino as it does in a church.

Again, taking advantage of your D-I skills means taking advantage of the outcomes that you throw most often during the hand-durations that you throwmost frequently.

Frankly, if you haven’t figured out how to do THAT; then you will rarely be able to show a profit from your dice-influencing efforts, and whatever profit you do produce from the long-hands (when they do eventually come along), will be quickly absorbed and expended into trying to cover all of your previous losses.

That’s a fools errand that you don’t have to take.

Like I said, most D-I gamblers take that route anyway simply because they not only don’t know any better; but also because they’ve been mistaught and unintentionally misled by the very same like-minded gamblers who also haven’t yet been able to turntheir own considerable D-I talents into sustainable bankroll-growing D-I profits. In many ways, that co-dependant relationship serves to perpetuate the continuation of those losing ways from one talented dice-influencer to the next.

By propagating the idea that we as dice-influencers need medium to long-hands to ‘get anywhere’ and to try to design press, press, press strategies that seek to take advantage of those mini-mega hands, only enables, breeds, and promulgates the continued losing for the vast majority of the D-I community.

I mean, let’s be real here folks. Gamblers lose money.

Yes, they sometimes win; but their wins never outpace their losses.

If you want to continue losing money, just keep on betting the way they’ve taught you to bet, and you will continue to go backwards regardless of how good your dice-influencing talents become.

Your dice-influencing skills are only part of the advantage-play equation. Betting on the outcomes that your D-I talents produce, is how you take advantage of those talents.

Gamblers continue to need outside sources to prop up their gambling bankrolls; whereas dice-influencers who bet on the outcomes that are most likely to occur during an AVERAGE hand, continue to grow their bankrolls on a very steady and predictable basis.

Yes, it’s that simple. Sadly though, it’s a concept that’s totally unacceptable to those who love the risk of the CHASE more than they like the reward of the CATCH.

Gambling dice-influencers love the RISK.

Advantage-play dice-influencers love the REWARD.

Now I’m sure I could have said all of that with a little more kindness and with a little more homespun back-slapping glad-handed humor, or with a little more ordinary-Joe empathy and compassion; but frankly a friendly arm around your shoulder from a co-dependant enabler who encourages your dependence on the big hands while actually hampering your bankroll's recovery and pretty much eliminating all chances of sustainable bankroll growth is the last friggin’ thing you need more of.

So don’t look to me for that; others are much better at it than I could ever to be. Instead, this series offers you a common sense way to build your bankroll in a steady and sustainable way, by simply taking better advantage of the most-common, most-frequently-occurring outcomes from the normal-length hands that you produce most often.

That doesn’t take ANY luck whatsoever; it only takes a little bit of D-I skill, and a slightly open mind.

But if you’d still rather be lucky than good; then keep on dreaming and fantasizing about making it to the big league.

If on the other hand you are prepared to use your modest D-I talents to maximize your profits; then all it takes is a serious look at what your normal ‘average-hand’ produces, and the answer (as well as sustainable bankroll-growing profit) is right there for the taking.

We’re going to pursue this train of thought a lot further in Part Four. I hope you’ll join me for that.

Until then,

When it comes to betting on random-rollers, most dice-influencers have a certain pattern that they follow when it comes to wagering on negative-expectation situations. If they lose a bet on a R-R, their next R-R bet will still be pretty much of the same size and scope as the one before, and their R-R bet after the next one will also be pretty much of the same size and scope too.

While they may not be betting large amounts of money on each individual R-R when they do that (though it does add up to a fair bit of money if they ever stop to consider the collective total of their R-R bets when calculated on a per-lap-around-the-table basis); the random-roller bets that they do make are done with large amounts of mental certainty.

Mental certainty, in this case, is not about whether you think a bet will win or lose; but rather the amount of conviction and confidence you have in making the bet itself.

If your standard R-R bet is a $12 6 and 8 Place-bet; then there’s probably very little fear when it comes time to actually put the chips down on the table. Though you don’t know ahead of time whether it will win or lose; you accept the fact that you are making a negative-edge bet, and in doing so, you make it with a high level of conviction and a low level of stress.

Compare that to how you feel when it comes time to bet on your own hands.

How much mental certainty do you have when it comes to making a properly-sized positive-expectation bet on your own validated advantage-play dice-influencing skills?

When we talk about "properly-sized positive-expectation bets"; we are NOT talking about starting out with widely-spread miniscule near-table-minimum hideously-under-sized bets that seek to turn a matchstick into a lumberyard. That kind of press-your-way-to-prosperity betting-strategy is a wasteful fool's errand, and one that will see you have an occasional big win, but those wins will never be quite large enough to get you over the net-profit deficit-hump of all your small but perniciously cancerous bankroll-eating losses.

Bet that way, and your skills will always produce far less net-profit than they could (and should) be doing right now if you were using geared-to-validated-edge wagers. The problem of course is that you have to truly believe in yourself and your abilities, and then you have to back up that belief with properly-apportioned wagers.

So I ask again, how much mental certainty do you have when it comes to making properly-sized, accurately-focused, proportioned-to-validated-edge bets on your own dice-influencing skills?

It is critically important that we not screw up our advantage-play priorities.

~As dice-influencers, ANY random-roller bets that we make should be done in a way that reduces our negative-expectation exposure to an absolute minimum. I won't coddle you like some co-dependant dice-nanny and say, "There, there little one, I know you feel the need to bet on all those nasty little random-rollers, so let me show you how to do it like a proper degenerate gambler would."

The simple truth is that if your collective one-lap-around-the-table random-bets add up to anywhere close to what you bet on yourself; then your D-I skills will almost never pull you through to net-profit...but when it does, it won't keep you there for very long.

If you'd rather be lucky than good; then count on almost always going home with less money than you came with.

~Betting with mental certainty means that we need to know that the wagers we make (when the dice are in our hands), are the ones that are best matched to our current skills.

~We also have to uphold and support that knowledge with a level of betting-confidence that parallels our skills.

~If our betting-confidence or our shooting-confidence vacillates and is easily spoiled by one or two not-so-good hands, and our bet-decisions waver with uncertainty and trepidation; then it’s likely that our shooting will also reflect that fear and apprehension.

That can't be a good thing in terms of producing great results.

On the other hand, if we’ve validated our actionable edge over the house with both at-home and in-casino verification; then our betting-confidence should stay buoyant despite one or two or even three non-productive hands, and therefore we should be betting on our own hands with a high level of conviction and a low level of stress, just like when we bet lower amounts of money on random-rollers.

In fact, betting on yourself should be way less stressful than betting on random-rollers. One is negative-expectation and the other is positive-expectation, but looking at the way some people bet with trepidation on their own advantaged hands and without fear on random-rollers; you'd think it was the other way around.

Though that doesn’t mean we should try to “shoot through” a shooting slump when our toss is in the toilet, it does means that we can make a small tactical retreat to fix the shooting problem before retackling the tables with as high a bet-confidence and mental-certainty as before.

It is critically important to understand that our edge over the house WILL NOT redeem itself on every toss in every hand and in every session. Rather, it will redeem itself over roughly the SAME RANGE OF ROLLS OVER WHICH YOU FIRST VALIDATED YOUR EDGE.

So, for example, if you first validated your edge on let’s say the 6 & 8 Place-bet over a toss-sampling of 300 in-casino rolls; then you can expect that it will generally redeem itself to that same approximate level again over the same number of in-casino rolls. However, it also means that you’ll probably toss a number of totally crappy hands along the way…the same as you did when you were first validating the very same edge you are seeking to exploit right now.

The some-great and some-not-so-great ebb and flow of results that you endured during your edge-quantification/validation period is likely to roughly repeat itself during your edge-exploitation/profit-making stage too. It would be foolish to expect otherwise, and it would also be foolish to abandon your geared-to-skill wagers on your already-validated advantage-shooting just because you threw a couple or three hands that stunk up the joint.

If you want your D-I profits to move up to the next stage of earnings; then you have to make properly-sized adequately-proportioned-to-your-validated-edge bets with AT LEAST as much mental certainty as you do when you plunk your money down on a random-roller.

That is how you get away from having to rely on luck, and how you start relying on the reliable potency of your skill.

Until next time,

How Does The Time-Interval Between Each Successive Lap Around The Table Affect Your Shooting?

Let’s give some thought to the varying amounts of time we have to wait between each shooting opportunity when we are standing at the craps table in a casino.

Depending on how crowded the table is, and depending on what the dice are doing as they make their way back around to your position; it could take anywhere from as little as two or three minutes if there’s only a couple of other players…all the way to nearly an hour if it’s packed with 12 or 14 players…even if the dice aren’t doing anything remarkable and the table conditions are somewhat choppy.

So what effect does varying shooting-opportunity intervals have on your de-randomized toss when the dice finally do make it back to your table-position, and how do any of the random betting situations that presented themselves during that one lap figure into how you bet on your own hand when the dice are finally back to your spot?

Does the amount of money that you just won or lost on random-bets have any effect on the amount of money that you will now bet on yourself?

Does the amount of money that you won or lost on yourself last time you shot have any effect on the amount of money that you bet on yourself this time?

~If you shot well last time, do you start to get impatient if it looks like it’s going to be a while before the dice get back around to you?

~If your last hand was a lousy one, are you looking at your next shooting-opportunity as a chance for your D-I talents to redeem themselves; or do your most recent results cause a pang of worry and provide the impetus to cut back on your next set of A-P wagers?

These are the kinds of things that can get into your head and mess with your shooting-focus to the point of total distraction. They can also mess with the efficiencyof your advantage-play bets to the point of inefficiency whereby you'll still end up losing money no matter how good your own shooting is on the next hand.

~In the same vein, if you just threw a lousy hand, does your normally restrained random-betting discipline go out the window in hopes that a 'lucky bet' on a negative-expectation R-R will make up for the loss that you just incurred during your turn, or does it steel your loins even more in terms of strengthening your resolve not to waste your gaming bankroll on random bets; preferring instead to use that money on your own positive-expectation toss the next time around?

The next time you are at the table, I want you to think about how each one of those things may unwittingly play into your bet-making decisions, not only on the random rollers that you have to endure as you wait for the dice to cycle back around to you; but also how the bets you made on yourself during your most recent shooting-opportunity affects how you plan to bet on your next turn with the dice.

~I want you to look at your bet-making decisions and any changes you make to them along the way and ask yourself WHY you are making them; and whether or not they are being made out of impatience, or greed, or boredom, or need for action, or out of fear.

~Ask yourself HOW the changes that you make to your bet-strategy fits into the whole idea of advantage-play dice-influencing and whether those decisions are keyed to that or to something totally unrelated to advantage-play wagering and more closely associated with random gambling or thrill-seeking or boredom or impatience.

I also want you to consider how the cool-down period between shooting opportunities affects the physical side of your game too?

~Do you find that a between-hands interval longer than 10 or 15 minutes takes you out of your finely-honed groove and is it then more difficult to get back into a proper frame of mind and shooting-focus when the dice come back around again?

~Do you find it difficult to “recapture the magic” of a good or great hand if it’s been more than 10 or 15 minutes since you last shot the dice.

~If you threw a lousy hand, do you need a longer time between shooting-opportunities to refocus your thoughts and re-energize your shooting-confidence?

~Have you ever noticed how most players don’t stand quite as tall after 20 or 30 or 40 minutes at the table as they did when they first walked up to the game? Has the game worn them down to the point where even their posture suffers? Is that an indication of settling-in “comfort” or is it a sign that our posture isn’t quite as erect after we’ve been standing for awhile?

~What about the angle of your head and neck. Do you notice that your head isn’t quite as erect as it was when you first bought into the game. Is your chin much closer to your chest because you are always looking down at the layout or is the action of the game wearing you down?

~Do you find yourself leaning heavily on the rail as though you are deep in prayer? Is that a posture thing or are you really praying?

Do you think any of those things will affect your shooting-posture and your dice-influencing accuracy when the dice come around again?

I think they will.

Why should you even have to think about any of those things?

Well the fact is, ALL of those things can take what would otherwise be an outstanding high-player-edge on-axis primary-face toss and turn it into a ragged and shabby looking display of near-random shooting.

~Similarly, the bet-decisions you make along the way, especially the ones that involve anything more than minimal wagers on random-rollers, almost always play into how you make changes to your own advantaged bets, and in most cases those changes have nothing to do with your actual edge over the house, but rather the edge you let the house have over you.

Think about WHY you vary your bets from where they optimally should be, and you’ll likely find the source of most of your losses or at least the lion’s share of your unrealized profit.

At the same time, think about how your shooting-posture can imperceptibly erode as a session wears on and think about how The Time-Interval Between Each Successive Lap Around The Table Affects Your Shooting.

As always,
I'd Rather be GOOD Than LUCKY
Part One

Most people will tell you, "I'd rather be lucky than good", and so they use that wishful edict to chiefly rule their betting strategies (just look for the "press, press, press" or "press, power-press, and parlay" guys) and you'll find the players that feast on the occasional lucky streak...but lose it all back if not all during this session, it will almost all be surely gone by the end of their next two or three sessions.

They are counting on random luck (no matter how outstanding their own actual dice-influencing skill might be) to carry the day and open the flood-gates of unimagined riches. Sadly, the occasional wave of lucky windfall profits usually gets overwhelmed by the even greater wave after wave erosion of random outcomes whereby their once fat bankroll gets needlessly drowned in the riptide undertow.

Counting on luck to make it through a session (or life) is actually counter-productive. Sure, someone will sometimes get lucky, but as a casino strategy, it's a surefire way to the poorhouse (or at least a surefire way that requires your bankroll to be continually replenished from outside sources).

In many ways, counting on luck not only insults the intelligence and hard work of others who actually put in the refined labor and concerted effort to achieve their steady accomplishments; but it also gives rise to it's own special brand of laziness and apathy towards self-improvement and refined skills-development to a point where the steady ability-driven accomplishments of others are shrugged-off and rejected as being unexceptional (or at least unworthy of luck-driven headlines).

The point is though; luck itself is so flighty and unpredictable, that pursuing your endeavours with less than a whole-hearted full-court effort in the hopes that you'll be lucky too; is to short-change your chances of success by a magnitude that verges on the sinful.

Perhaps that is a reflection of the times, where the idea of working hard or workingsmart is largely rejected in favor of letting random luck determine your future instead of choosing your own path and pursuing it relentlessly.

While hoping for (and waiting for) luck to deliver unspeakable riches into their waiting hands, many people miss all kinds of opportunities that are theirs for the taking.

To my mind, that's the worst kind of gamble you can take.

Stop Gambling…Start Winning

Most gamblers, and gambling books for that matter, all advise you to bet-it-up when the dice are sizzling hot, and scale things back when the cubes are ice cold (or vice versa for Darkside bettors).

For this discussion, let’s ignore random streaks and indiscriminate trends; we’ll leave them for the gamblers. We are here to make money, not to gamble.

If you are counting on luck to see you through; then I'll sincerely wish you luck, because you are certainly going to need it (not only in the casino, but also in life).

For now let’s concentrate on the times when we ourselves or other skilled dice-influencers have the dice.

Under those circumstances, traditional wisdom still highly recommends that we shouldpress up our bets on a hot D-I hand, and scale things back to a minimum until any given D-I hand is adequately qualified as a bona-fide ‘good’ one.

You would think that by following the traditional press-when-you-are-winning school-of-gambling-thought, that we’d come out way ahead of the game…or at least even a littleahead.

Sadly though, when measured over a reasonable number of multiple sessions, most press-when-you-are-winning skilled-shooters emerge with a net-loss, or at best, anear-break-even position despite all of their D-I efforts.

What’s wrong with this picture?

Well, by buying into traditional gambling wisdom, most skilled players completely overlook advantage-play wisdom.

The two are worlds apart…as is their bankroll-related growth.

~One satisfies the gambler in us…at the cost of a steadily deteriorating bankroll despiteour generally positive-expectation D-I shooting.

The idea behind this new series is to take your current shooting abilities, no matter how humble you personally think they are; and show you the most direct, lowest risk way to turn your D-I skills into real, tangible, and consistently predictable profit.

...and when you see someone that's really successful; don't delude yourself into thinking that it was all "luck" that let them achieve everything they've got. Stop for a second to consider that perhaps skill, hard work, unabashed resolve, perseverance, intense commitment, and dogged determination might have had a bit of a hand in it too.

Otherwise, if you'd rather be lucky than good; then just keep on farting into the same sofa-cushion and continue buying lottery tickets; and perhaps you will get lucky.

Me, I'd rather be good.

Until next time,
